ويسألونك عن ذي القرنين قل سأتلو عليكم منه ذكرا، إنا مكنا له في الأرض وآتيناه من كل شيء سببا، فأتبع سببا (الكهف: 83-85). وقد أوردت هاتين الآيتين الكريمتين لأن المعجم الوسيط يستشهد بالآية الأخيرة في تبيان معنى «منح السلطان»، ولا يورد باقي الآيات التي تتضمن الفعل يمكن، والذي يعني حسبما يقول معجم ألفاظ القرآن الكريم (مجمع اللغة العربية) يثبت ويوطد، واللفظة واردة في آيات أخرى كثيرة (10: الأعراف، و26: الأحقاف، و6: الأنعام، و41: الحج، و6 و57: القصص، و55: النور) بهذا المعنى المحدد، والذي يتضمن ولا شك قدرا من السلطان، ولكنه يختلف؛ فمعنى:

ولقد مكناكم في الأرض وجعلنا لكم فيها معايش (الأعراف: 10)، و

وليمكنن لهم دينهم الذي ارتضى لهم (النور: 55) لا يوحي بالسلطة قدر ما يوحي بالتثبيت والتوطيد، وسوف أورد هنا ترجمات أهم مترجمي معاني القرآن للآيتين الكريمتين من سورة يوسف والكهف؛ لأبين مدى الاختلاف والاتفاق بين المعنيين. (A) (1) And even thus We established Yusuf in the land, to take his location (there) where he decides. (Yusuf, 56). (A) (2) And they ask you concerning Thulqarnayn. Say, “I will soon recite to you a mention of him.” Surely We established him in the earth, and We brought him means to (accomplish) everything. So he followed up (to another) means. (The Cave, 83-85).

محمد محمود غالي. (B) (1) Thus did We establish Joseph in the land, and he dwelt there as he pleased. (B) (2) They will ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say “I will give you an account of him.” “We made him mighty in the land and we gave him means to achieve all things. He journeyed ...”

داود. (C) (1) Thus did We establish Joseph in the land that he might house himself there at pleasure. (C) (2) They will ask thee of Dhoul-Karnain (the two-horned). Say: “I will recite to you an account of him.”

We established his power upon the earth, and made for him a way to everything. And a route he followed.

رودويل. (D) (1) So We established Joseph in the land, to make his dwelling there wherever he would. (D) (2) They will question thee concerning Dhool Karnain. Say: “I will recite to you a mention of him.”

We established him in the land and We gave him a way to everything; and he followed a way ...

آربري. (E) (1) Thus gave We power to Joseph in the land. He was the owner of it where he pleased. (E) (2) They will ask thee of Dhu’l- Qarneyn. Say: I shall recite unto you a remembrance of him.

Lo! We made him strong in the land and gave him unto everything a road. And he followed a road.
