مقدمة ... تقديم باللغة العربية: عُرف مجمّع الملك فهد بالمدينة المنورة بعدة إنجازات عظيمة على مدى سنوات عديدة من عمره وقد أضاف إِلى أعماله تلكم الندوة العالمية التي تضم عددًا كبيرًا من العلماء والباحثين ليقدّموا ثمار جهودهم وتحقيقاتهم حول سنة المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلموسيرته. وهذا البحث الذي تجدونه في أيديكم بعنوان: «ببليوغرافيا لكتابات ومؤلفات عن الحديث والسنة باللغة الإنجليزية» إِن هو إِلا مشاركة متواضعة في هذه٩ الندوة. وما كنتُ لأخوض غمار هذا العمل الشاق إذا لم يكن هناك حثٌ من قبل منظمي هذه الندوة. وإِني لأحمد الله تعالى على أن الرحلة التي بدأتها من مكتبة المركز الثقافي الإسلامي بلندن في مارس ٢٠٠٣م والتي أخذتني إِلى عدد من الأقطار بحثًا وراء مزيد من المعلومات قد وصلت أخيرًا إِلى النهاية؛ فخلال هذه المدة القصيرة التي لم تتجاوز ثلاثة أشهر تنقّل بي المطاف - وأنا أتطلّع إِلى جمع المواد - إلى عدد من المكتبات التابعة لمؤسسات علمية مثل الجامعة الإسلامية العالمية في إِسلام آباد (باكستان)، ومكتب الدعوة في البحرين، وجامعة الملك عبد العزيز في جدة، والمؤسسة الإسلامية بمدينة ليستر (بريطانيا) بالإضافة إِلى إِطلالة على مكتبات عامة في مدينة لاهور (باكستان) .ويستند بحثي هذا - في معظم عمله - إلى مصدرين جليلين نشرا في عام ١٩٨٠م والذي يليه وهما: «الكتابات حول الحديث باللغات الأوروبية» أعدّه المسلم الألماني السيد/أحمد فون دَنْفَر وقامت بطبعه المؤسسة الإسلامية عام ١٩٨١م

و"كتابات حول الحديث والسيرة باللغات الغربية" للسيد محمد أنيس والسيدة عالية نسرين أطهَر (طبع في بلومنغتن عام ١٩٨٠م) . وبما أن المصدرين المذكورين متعاصران تجد فيهما كثيرًا من الأسماء والعناوين مشتركة. ويتميز المصدر الثاني بإعطاء تعريف موجز عن كل عمل علمي بالإضافة إلى تسجيل بيانات عن عدد طبعاته وذكر المقالات التي تناولته بالتعريف أو بالنقد، وكلاهما يشمل في طياته تراثًا خاصًا بهذا الموضوع باللغات الأوروبية، غير أن اللغة الإنجليزية أخذت منه نصيب الأسد. فكتاب الأستاذ أحمد فون دَنْفَر - على سبيل المثال - سجّل ٥٥٩ عنوانًا ٣٦٠ منها باللغة الإنجليزية وكانت مهمتي أن أضيف إِلى هذين المصدرين ما استجد بعد تاريخ صدورهما. وأنا واثق - وأنا أقدم هذه القائمة - أنها تكاد تغطي جميع ما نشر عن هذا الموضوع من عام ١٩٨٠م إِلى شهر يونيو من هذا العام (٢٠٠٣م) . وقد بذلت في إعداد هذا البحث والحصول على المعلومات التي تضمَّنها قصارى جهدي، وإذا فاتني شيء - من غير قصد - فلعلي أستدركه مستقبلا. ومما يبعث على الغبطة والسرور، مانراه خلال الاثنين والعشرين عامًا الأخيرة من ازدهار بالغ في نقل متون كتب الحديث إِلى اللغة الإنجليزية مثل سنن أبي داود وسنن النسائي والجمع بين الصحيحين بالإضافة إِلى تفسير ابن كثير في عشرة مجلدات، كما ظهر خلال هذه الفترة عدد من المؤلفات في الردّ على كتابات المستشرقين من أمثال غولد تسيهر وشاخت في هجومهم على علم الأسانيد ولديّ مساهمة متواضعة في هذا المجال وقد جاءت كأطروحة

للدكتوراه بعنوان «تصور المهدي عند أهل السنة مع دراسة كتاب الفتن لنُعيم بن حَماد» وقد تناولت فيها بالردّ أفكار «مارغولِيَث» على وجه الخصوص. ولأجل ربط الحاضر بالماضي ألخص فيما يلي النتائج التي توصّل إِليها السيد أحمد فون دنفر في كتابه المشار إِليه سابقًا: «سبق الفرنسيون الإنجليز إِلى تسجيل تعريف للحديث - لأول مرة من نوعه - في «ببليوغرافيا الشرقية» من إِعداد بارثلميو دي هربيلات (طبع باريس عام ١٦٩٧م) وبعد مضي قرن أو أكثر جاءت هنالك مساهمة فرنسية أخرى فقد قام «هيمر برغستال» بإعداد فهرس لمواضيع الجامع الصحيح للإمام البخاري. وكان من بين الأعمال الأولية باللغة الإنجليزية ترجمة كتاب «مشكاة المصابيح» لمحمد بن عبد الله الخطيب التبريزي وطبعت في كلكتّا عام ١٨٠٩ -١٨١٠م. ومن أهمّ الأعمال التي رأت النور بعدها كتابات لسبرنجر عام ١٨٥٦م بعنوان «حول مصارد التدوين للحقائق التاريخية عند المسلمين وتطويرها»، وفي عام ١٨٩٥م ظهرت ترجمة ثلاثمائة حديث من كتاب «الأدب المفرد» للإمام البخاري بقلم السيد علي حسن بعنوان «اللآلي التي لا تقدّر بثمن» . وقبله بخمس سنوات قام غولد تسهير بطبع بحثه بعنوان «الدراسات المحمدية» (عام ١٨٨٩ - ١٨٩٠ م) باللغة الألمانية، ولكن المجلد الثاني من هذا الكتاب الخاص بدراسة علم الحديث لم يترجم إِلى اللغة الإنجليزية إِلا عام ١٩٧١م. ويمتاز القرن العشرون بثروة هائلة من كتابات حول الحديث من

قبل الكتاب المسلمين وغيرهم من أمثال ألفرد غيوم وشاخت وآربري وجيمز روبسون، أما إسهام المسلمين فقد جاء من قبل علماء شهيرين من أمثال محمد زبير صدّيقي وعبد الحميد صديقي والدكتور حميد الله والدكتور مصطفى الأعظمي والدكتور محسن خان» (انتهى الملخص) . وكما ذكرت سابقًا كان هناك تطور زاهر في الكتابات عن الحديث غير أنه يلاحظ للأسف أن المجهود العلمي الضخم الذي قام به الشيخ محمد ناصر الدين الألباني بقي - معظمه - مهملًا من قبل أصحاب القلم الإنجليزي باستثناء كتابه «صلاة النبي» الذي نقله إِلى اللغة الإنجليزية الدكتور أسامة حسن وطبع عام ١٩٩٣م. أرجو أن يكون هذا العمل المتواضع مساهمة مني في هذا المجال وخدمة لطلاب علم الحديث النبوي الشريف. وأدعو الله ﷿ أن يقبل مني هذا الجهد ويبارك فيه، آمين إِنه سميع قريب مجيب. صهيب حسن عبد الغفار لندن في ٣٠ ربيع الآخر ١٤٢٤؟ الموافق ٣٠ يونيو ٢٠٠٣م

مقدمة باللغة الإنجليزية: Foreword The King Fahad Complex (Madinah) is known for the many prestigious works it has commissioned over the years. It has added to its achievements by offering this unique opportunity to an assembly of scholars and researchers to present the fruit of their researches and examinations on the Sayings، Practices and Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . The paper in hand is entitled ‘A Bibliography on Hadith and Sunnah Writings in English’ and is the humble contribution by the author to this august Conference. I would never have dreamed on embarking on such an enormous task had I not been given the impetus by the Conference organisers. I thank Allah Almighty that the journey which began by browsing through the bookshelves of the library of the Islamic Cultural Centre (London) in March ٢٠٠٣، and which took me to a number of countries in the pursuit of more information، has finally reached its destination. With only a three-month time limit in which this project had to be completed، my quest took me to the library of the International Islamic University of Islamabad (Pakistan)، various bookshelves on the Mall in Lahore، the small English section of books in the Da،wa office in Bahrain، the library of the King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah، and finally the library of the Islamic Foundation in Leicester (UK) . I have based the greater part of my work on two excellent sources، both printed in ١٩٨٠/٨١. They are:

- “Literature on Hadith in European Languages”، which is a bibliography by the German Muslim Ahmad von Denffer (published by the Islamic Foundation، ١٩٨١) . - “Hadith and Sira Literature in Western Languages”، by Muhammad Anees and Alia Nasreen Athar (Bloomington ١٩٨٠) . The two titles are contemporary to each other and have many entries in common. The slight difference is that the second of the two titles tends to give a brief introduction of each work as well as the details of its re-prints and reviews (if any) . Both of them cover material that has been written in other European languages، but this is tiny compared to the level of material in English. For example، Ahmad von Denffer’s book shows ٥٥٩ entries، ~٣٦٠ of which are in English. As a researcher، my task was to enhance the material previously available. By presenting this bibliography، I am confident that it covers almost all the relevant material published between ١٩٨٠ and June ٢٠٠٣. As perfectness belongs only to Allah، I can only say that I have exerted all my abilities to collect the information available (in a very busy period of my life!) ; any material that has inadvertently missed my notice can be added to a later edition، if Allah wills. I note with great appreciation that the last twenty two years have witnessed a burgeoning in the translation into English of original texts of Hadith، such as the Sunan Abu Dawud and a part of Nasa’i; a combined collection of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim; Tafsir Ibn Kathir (in ten volumes)، which in my opinion is a Tafsir based mainly on Hadith and and so deserves its place in Hadith literature. This period has also seen many publications refuting the ill-conceived critical studies done by Goldziher and Schacht in

which they attack the Science of Isnad. My own humble contribution to this genre is my doctoral thesis entitled “The Concept of Mahdi among Muslims with reference to Kitab Al-Fitan by Nu،aim bin Hammad”. This thesis pays particular attention to the theories of Margoliouth. In order to link the past with the present، I have summarised below the conclusions reached by Ahmad von Denffer in his aforementioned Bibliography: The French preceded the English in recording a definition for Hadith، the first of its kind، in Bibliotheque Orientale by Bartholomew d’Herbelot (Paris، ١٦٩٧) . A century later، another French contribution appeared in the ١٩th Century: Hammer-Purgstall made a list of the subjects in Sahih Al-Bukhari. Among the earliest works in English was the translation of “Mishkat-al-Masabih” by Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Khatib Al-Tabrizi (Calcutta، ١٨٠٩-١٨١٠) . The next notable work was entitled “On the Origins and Progress of writing down historical facts among Muslims” by Sprenger in ١٨٥٦. The translation of ٣٠٠ Ahadith from Imam Bukhari’s Al-Adab Al-Mufrad was published by Ali Hassan under the title “Priceless Gems” in ١٨٩٥. Five years earlier، Ignaz Goldziher had produced his treatise entitled “Muhammedanische Studien” (١٨٨٩-٩٠)، but the second volume of this، which was devoted mainly to Hadith studies، was not translated into English until ١٩٧١. The twentieth Century thus saw a galaxy of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars contribute greatly to the body of Hadith literature. They included orientalists such as Guillame، Schacht، Arberry and James Robson. The Muslim contribution came from renowned scholars such as Muhammad Zubair Siddiqi، Abdul Hamid Siddiqi، Dr.

Hameedullah، Mustafa Azami and Dr. Muhsin Khan. (Here ends the summary) . As mentioned earlier، the body of Hadith literature in English has continued to expand rapidly. It is، however، a great pity that the valuable work of one of the greatest traditionists of recent times، Sheikh Muhammad Nasiruddin Al-Albani، has been largely ignored by English writers. The only exception is his work called “The Prophet’s Prayer” which was translated into English by my son Dr. Usama Hasan (١٩٩٣) . I hope and pray that the humble work in hand will be a milestone on the long road that has been trodden on before me and will continue to be walked upon by many others in the future. I will be honoured and consider myself fortunate if my modest treatise can be of service to future students who are in pursuit of this noble knowledge. A note on the order and subject matter of the contents المنهج المتبع في الببليوغرافيا This is a brief look at the methodology I have used in the Bibliography. ١. All entries are in alphabetical order. The author’s name is followed by the title، which may be a book or an article in a journal or a chapter in a book. ٢. Titles of books are given in bold and articles are in italics. A researcher will thus find all the writings of each author in the same place. ٣. Abbreviations are used for well-known journals. A list of such abbreviations is also provided. ٤. Each entry is classified into one of seven categories، denoted by abbreviations، to determine its subject matter. The categories and abbreviations are as listed below. - AUT: Authenticity Entries which deal with the Authenticity of the Sunnah or its importance، including discussions of Isnad and Matn. - CAT: Catalogue Bibliographical entries. - CRI: Criticism Entries that attack or defend the Science of Hadith. Most of the entries in this category were written by western orientalists. - TAD: Tadween (Recording)

This classification includes material related to the recording of Hadith and biographies of reporters. - TXT: Text The original texts of all Hadith books are in Arabic، but this classification is for translated works. - USU: Usul The terminology and explanation of Mustalah writings (Science of Hadith) come into this category. - WRI: Writings All other general works on Islam that deal specifically with aspects of the Hadith and Sunnah are classified in this category. ملاحظة: - طبعت أسماء الكتب بالحرف الأسود، أمّا أسماء البحوث المنشورة في المجلات فهي بالحروف المائلة.
