Spies without Cloaks (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1996). The first chapter is the most recent and most thorough case against Gorbachev. The rest of the book argues that the postcoup KGB continues to be a dangerous and independent force in Russia.

David Remnick,

Resurrection (New York: Random House, 1997). A surprisingly hopeful view of postcoup Russia, especially since most of the book chronicles the country’s descent into chaos, corruption, and crime .
