أي رسائل كلامية اعتقد أنها أتت مباشرة من الرب. وأحيانًا بقيت هذه في ذاكرة محمد وأصحابه وأحيانًا كتبت. وفي حوالي ٦٥٠م جمعت وكتبت في القرآن (أو Koran كتاب الإسلام المقدس) في الصيغة التي بين أيدينا. ويؤمن [يعتقد] المسلمون بأن القرآن وحي إلهي كتب من كلام الرب نفسه (١) . ونلاحظ في هذا الاقتباس الذي تفوح منه رائحة التشكيك أن كلمة "وحي" حصرت بين فاصلتين معقوفتين قبلها ومثلها بعدها أي ركِّنت. وهذه سنة متبعة في كتابات من يشككون في الوحي ممن ذكرنا آنفا يقصد بها التشكيك فيما بين الفواصل وتأكيده دون سواه في السياق الذي يرد فيه (٢) . ويخرج وات بهذه النتيجة من خلال تأثره بأقوال سابقيه وبفهمهم الخاطئ لمعنى كلمة وحي، فهم يقصرون معناه على حديث النفس للنفس ويزعمون بأن مصدره هو "اللاوعي الجماعي، الذي هو مصدر كل وحي ديني" (٣)، وعملًا بمنهجهم في اختلاق النتائج ولي أعناق الوقائع التاريخية وتقطيع أوصالها
