(Columbia, S.C.: University of South Carolina Press, 1972). Originally published in 1724, this classic history was originally attributed to a “Captain Charles Johnson.” Only in the twentieth century did most (but not all) scholars conclude that it was written by Defoe, the author of

Robinson Crusoe

and

Moll Flanders .

Ralph Paine,

The Book of Buried Treasure (New York: Macmillan, 1922). As the title indicates, Paine was more interested in searching for treasure than a French pass, but it was the latter that he discovered .
