من المؤكد أن أوغسطينوس اعتبر المسيحية الأصلية أخروية الطابع؛ فهي تستقي نقاط مرجعيتها ومعاييرها من اعتبارات تتجاوز عملية الزمن والتاريخ. ورغم أنه كان مقتنعا بأن هذا العالم هو عالم الرب، فإنه لم يؤمن بأن الحياة البشرية يمكن أن تنتمي بالكامل للنظام العلماني والمادي، أو أن القيم الرئيسية يمكن أن تتمثل في السلطة والكرامة والثروة والجنس. وقد رسخ شيشرون في ذهن أوغسطينوس ترسيخا تاما فكرة أن هذه القيم يستحيل أن تكون الطريق إلى السعادة، سواء للفرد أو للمجتمع.
